Amtrak will be resubmitting its application for gates and impasse fencing at several locations along the Hudson River, including Ernest R. Lasher Memorial Park, the foot of Main Street, and Cheviot Landing. If constructed as proposed, the gates and fencing would hinder peoples’ shoreline access along the maintenance road and across the tracks at Main Street. This reduction in river access for water-related recreational activities would be inconsistent with the goals of Germantown’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Strategy (LWRS) and its pending Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan status.

Scenic Hudson has been assisting communities to prevent this potential loss of river access. To that end, Scenic Hudson has hired a consultant team* to create a plan to recommend public access locations along the eastern shore of the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Rensselaer. The plan will identify opportunities, challenges and recommendations to maintain and increase people’s ability to enjoy water-related recreation to the Hudson River, including walking, boating, fishing, hunting, birding and ice boating. The plan will describe where and how people currently use the shoreline, identify gaps in public access, and recommend places for new safe shoreline access and ways to reduce risk along the tracks.

You can help by providing your input about where and how you use the river and, more importantly, where and how you’d like to use the river in the future.
